Nicole Young - ACE Award Winner

Nicole Young

AAP Wilmington Academic Advisor Nicole Young was recently awarded a Rising Star Award from the Delaware American Council on Education (ACE) Women's Network (DAWN), a professional organization dedicated to promoting the representation and advancement of women in higher education. Nicole accepted her award at DAWN's annual awards dinner held Oct. 16.

Nicole, of Avondale, Pa., has been an academic advisor for the AAP in Wilmington since March 2016. She divides her time between the George Campus and the UD Downtown Center in Wilmington, serving a population of about 450 students, and teaches First-Year and Sophomore Seminar courses.

Nicole recently accepted a new position within UD's College of Arts & Sciences, where she is serving as an undergraduate academic program manager, but she is continuing her advisement and instructional roles with the AAP throughout November.

UD is well represented among the DAWN membership. Pictured here at the Oct. 16 awards dinner are, from left: Julia O'Hanlon, UD School of Public Policy & Administration (SPPA) policy scientist and DAWN Membership Committee representative; Latoya Watson, AAP assistant dean; Nicole Young, AAP academic advisor and Rising Star Award recipient; Jessica Velez, SPPA limited term researcher; and Kathleen Murphy, SPPA policy scientist and associate director of the Institute for Public Administration.

Prior to joining the AAP, Nicole held several roles within West Chester University, most recently serving as an undergraduate program counselor. She completed her M.S. in Organization Leadership from Cabrini College and her B.S. in Professional Studies from West Chester University. She is currently working toward her Ed.D. in Educational Leadership at UD. Her primary area of research focuses on the use of technology to promote a holistic and proactive approach to student support, an approach evident in the innovative student-engagement projects and outreach efforts she developed with AAP Peer Mentors during the mentorship program's inaugural semester in fall 2018.

A staunch advocate for students during her tenure with the AAP, Nicole also volunteers as an affiliate within the Office of Student Conduct, providing support and guidance in student conduct, sexual misconduct and non-discrimination cases. In spring 2018, she also completed her Leveraging Equity and Diversity (LEAD) Ally certification, as well as a Management Essentials certification. Beyond the UD community, Nicole is a member of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).

We congratulate Nicole on her Rising Star Award and look forward to continuing to work with her in her new role within CAS!
